OEKO-TEX vs REACH vs GRS: Textile Certifications Explained for Promotional Merchandise

Buyers in EU, UK, Germany, and Nordic markets increasingly demand OEKO-TEX, REACH, or GRS certification on lanyards, wristbands, and bags. Here's what each certification actually covers and which one your factory should have.

Why These Three Certifications Matter for Imports to EU & UK

Modern EU customs and retailer compliance audits will reject shipments of textile-based promotional products that lack proper documentation. The three most-requested certifications for lanyards, wristbands, patches, and bags are OEKO-TEX Standard 100, REACH compliance, and GRS (Global Recycled Standard).

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 — Skin-Contact Safety

OEKO-TEX certifies that every component of a textile product (fabric, thread, zipper, label, hardware) has been tested for over 100 harmful chemicals — formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, AZO dyes, etc. There are 4 product classes based on skin contact intensity. Lanyards and wristbands typically certify under Class II (direct skin contact).

REACH — EU Chemical Regulation

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is an EU law (EC 1907/2006) covering Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). Any product imported into the EU must comply. REACH is mandatory; OEKO-TEX is voluntary but stricter.

GRS — Global Recycled Standard

GRS certifies that a product contains a verified percentage of recycled materials (typically RPET — recycled polyester from plastic bottles) and that the supply chain meets social and environmental standards. Required for brands marketing 'sustainable' lanyards or bags.

How to Request Certificates with Your Order

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I get a certificate copy with my order? +
Yes, on request. We provide a PDF copy of the OEKO-TEX certificate (showing scope and validity) and a REACH SVHC declaration of conformity. Both are commonly required by EU customs and retailer audits.
Does certification add to the unit cost? +
OEKO-TEX and REACH are included in our standard pricing — no upcharge. GRS recycled polyester (RPET) typically adds 8-15% to the material cost depending on recycled percentage and order volume.
Can you certify per-order or only annually? +
Annual certification covers all production within validity period. We schedule audits in Q1 each year. For one-off compliance documentation (e.g., a buyer asking for a specific batch test), we can arrange third-party SGS/TUV testing at $300-600 per test.
Is OEKO-TEX recognized in the USA? +
Yes, OEKO-TEX is globally recognized but not legally required in the US. CPSIA (lead/phthalates testing) is the US equivalent — we can also provide CPSIA test reports for children's wristbands.
What about Prop 65 for California? +
California's Proposition 65 requires warnings for products containing 900+ listed chemicals. Our REACH-compliant products are also Prop 65 compliant, but if you specifically need a Prop 65 declaration, we can issue one — request at order placement.
